On January 7, 2014 the Kung Fu movie world was dealing with the loss of one of the greatest contributors to Kung Fu movies (indeed Hong Kong and World Cinema) Sir Run Run Shaw. As the head of Shaw Brothers Studios Sir Run Run lead the movie world in making Kung Fu movies and is responsible ( along with others) for the worldwide popularity of Kung Fu films and the culture of Kung Fu movies that have spread to the four corners of the Earth. His Shaw Brothers Studios and the classic they produced directly influenced American pop culture, especially Urban Hip Hop culture, playing a part in creating the Wu Tang Clan, influencing Jeru the Damaja, as well as countless others.
Sir Run Run made it possible for us, the Kung Fu movie fans, to enjoy such stars as Jimmy Wang Yu, Gordon Liu, Fu Sheng, Lau Kar Leung, The Venom Mob, David Chiang, Ti Lung, Chen Kuan Tai, Cheng Pei Pei, Kara Hui Ying Hung and numerous others. He gave a home to visionary directors such as Chang Cheh, Chor Yuen, King Hu, Tang Chia, and many others and provided early stunt work for today’s legends like Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Sammo Hung, Cory Yuen, just to name a few. The Legend Of Sir Run Run Shaw is a tribute dedicated to this visionary businessman who made a movie studio become something more and has left lasting and positive influences that still continue to be used in pop culture references throughout the World. Check out this touching tribute a great man:
