Trailer Tuesday: Marvel Cinematic Universe vs DC Extended Universe Edition
I won’t lie. I have been a comic book fan since I was 6 years old! Like all little kids, I feel in love with Superman and some of my fondest memories involve going to the movies with my Mom to see Christopher Reeves fly across the screen. Fast forward to the last 15 years and I still am a fan of comic book movies, in general. Today’s trailer Tuesday looks at some MCU Disney plus shows, HBO Max Justice League Synder Cut and yet another iteration of the worlds greatest detective! Without further ado let’s get into Trailer Tuesday!
Hawkeye (TV Series)
Series Directed by
Rhys Thomas (3 episodes, 2021)
Bert (1 episode, 2021)
Bertie (1 episode, 2021)
Starring Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld, Florence Pugh, Alaqua Cox, Zahn McClarnon, Tony Dalton, Vera Farmiga
Plot: Series based on the Marvel Comics superhero Hawkeye, centering on the adventures of Young Avenger, Kate Bishop, who took on the role after the original Avenger, Clint Barton.
Film Fan Dojo reaction: Wow! As with most Marvel teaser trailers we get a lot packed into a short period. Let’s digest this: Nick Fury and Commander Hill enlist a young Kate Bishop for a mission involving some superhuman experimentation she is of course going to get help from her mentor Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and the seemingly new Black Widow (Florence Pugh). Since SHIELD is involved (I guess, is there even still a SHIELD after the events of AVENGERS: INFINITY and ENDGAME), we get a shot of Major Ross (William Hurt), flashback of Kate being trained in the use of the bow and arrow, conspiracies and more. What we didn’t get were hand to hand combat scenes, but since it is a teaser and both Hawkeye and Black Widow are adept at unarmed combat as well as the trend in the MCU is to have at least two empty handed fight scenes I am confident that we will get plenty of them in this Disney+ series. As I stated earlier, I am a fan of these shows and I always did like the Hawkeye character I will be watching this series when it debuts in March 2021! Zack Snyder’s Justice League
Directed by
Zack Snyder
Starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa,Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Harry Lennix, Jared Leto, Ciarán Hinds, Ray Porter, Amy Adams, Joe Manganiello
Plot: Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman , the Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg —as they attempt to save the world from the catastrophic threat of Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) and his army of Parademons.
Film Fan Dojo reaction: Like many who grew up reading Justice League comics and really liking the Darkside storylines, I have to admit to being more than slightly disappointed in 2017’s Justice League. It felt rushed, not well planned and missing key story elements. In 2019, Warner Brothers announced that we would get the Zack Snyder cut of the Justice League. While not a huge fan of Zack Snyder ( and not a detractor either) I was intrigued by,at least seeing, his vision of a live action Justice League. According to any online comic book movie and entertainment sites, this cut will be 4 hours, not be a series on HBO Max, and a few new scenes we shot and some others were re-shot to fit with Snyder’s story and vision. As I watched the trailer, I saw some things that give me hope this will be better than the 2017 version: 1. We get to see Darkseid and the backdrop of Apokolips, 2. We get to see Barry (The Flash) actually adding a very good point for what seems like the JL’s upcoming battle, 3. A destroyed Earth with parademons flying through the air, 4. Cyborg’s (Ray Fisher) angst and of course, a different looking Superman (Henry Cavill). At a reportedly 4 hours, I think we will get a more coherent story and also with cast member additions like Jared Leto ( The Joker), Joe Manganiello (Deathstroke) and others , it seems as if Snyder will be using this move to expand the JL story in the DCEU. Zack Snyder’s Justice League is set to release in March 2021 on HBO MAX.
LOKI
Directed by
Kate Herron
Starring Tom Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Gugu Mbatha-Raw,Owen Wilson, Wunmi Mosaku
Plot: Loki steals the Tesseract after the Battle Of New York in 2012. He uses the Tesseract to travel through time and alter human history.
Film Fan Dojo reaction: Loki (Tom Hiddleston) has become a fan favorite character of the MCU. Always playing both sides of the fence and shifting loyalties at will, many fans were very hurt when Thanos snapped his neck in AVENGERS: INFINITY. Given a new lease on life during ENDGAME, the LOKI series sees him steal the Tesseract and make his escape and this is where the trailer picks up. It appears if the Tesseract sent him back in time or maybe to another dimension where he is going to wreak havoc as only Loki can do. Out of all the MCU series’ trailers so far, this one looks like the most fun! In quick clips, Loki battles agents (from the 60s), Mongol warriors, and more. Could the Loki series play into the upcoming Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness? LOKI streams on Disney+ in May 2021.
The Batman
Directed by
Matt Reeves
Starring Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell, Zoë Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Paul Dano,Jeffrey Wright, Peter Sarsgaard
Plot: In his second year of fighting crime, Batman explores the corruption that plagues Gotham City and how it may tie to his own family, in addition to coming into conflict with a serial killer known as the Riddler.
Film Fan Dojo reaction: Out of all the DC trailers I went over (and the Marvel ones too) The Batman gives us more in terms of screen martial arts. Let’s get to that in a moment. First, Matt Reeves (so far) has crafted a dark, but recognizable Gotham City. He has also established a somber Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) and some key crime figures in quick shots like The Penguin (Colin Farrell) and the madness of The Riddler (Paul Dano). We also get to see a tie in to Zack Sndyer’s JL and the extended Universe building : The Flash appears to be time traveling ( the same scene included in the Snyder cut Justice League), and we get to see Deathstroke!
Now for the quick tease of fight scenes we get Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) performing a Capoeira combination known as Chapeu de Couro or Martelo no Chao when fighting The Batman, as well as some fisticuffs courtesy of Deathstroke and Batman. In these short clips, particularly of Batman fighting, I already think it looks better than the Keysi method which was the primary choreography in the Dark Knight Trilogy (and a reason I think the Trilogy loses some of its excitement). I must admit when I heard the casting I was not impressed, but after seeing this trailer I am excited to see Mat Reeves’ version of the story. The Batman is scheduled for a March 2022 release.
